S. African Students Protest Visit by U.S. Secretary of StateA group of South African students at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg Friday protested against the visit to the country by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was due to deliver a speech at the university.The students accused the United States of only acting in its own interests. "We are protesting against the U.S. whom we believe always acts in their own best interests and not in the interests of Africa," spokesman for the South African Students Congress Welcome Buthelezi said. He said America's "assistance to Africa will only mean well for a few and continuing poverty for the masses." Powell arrived in South Africa on Thursday night to begin a three-day visit to South Africa, the second leg of his four-nation Africa tour. |
