Chinese, Portuguese Foreign Ministers Meet in Beijing

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan met Friday with Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama who is here to attend the third ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Tang said Sino-Portuguese relations have progressed smoothly in recent years and bilateral cooperation has been fruitful.

Noting that Portugal attaches importance to its relationship with China, Gama said his country has always pushed forward the development of Europe-China relations in the European Union. He also said he supports China's early entry into the World Trade Organization, and values highly China's important role in international organizations.

Briefing Tang on his recent visit to Macao, Gama said that Portugal believes that the development of Macao has been good after its return to China in 1999, and there have been an increase in Portuguese investment and trade with Macao, which indicates Portugal's confidence in Macao.

Tang noted that facts have proven that China's reform and opening-up have brought about a positive impact on Macao-Portugal relations, believing that Macao's future will be better.

They also exchanged views on major international issues.
