Wait For Decision on Delegation of Constitutional Tasks: Indonesian President

Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid Saturday asked the people to wait for the results of the meeting of political parties' leaders on the delegation of constitutional tasks to Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

"Let us wait for the results of the work hard of many sides which have been searching for a (political) solution," he said during a sudden press conference held at the presidential palace here.

Wahid was quoted by the Antara News Agency as saying that he conveyed on Friday a draft of the delegation of constitutional tasks to Megawati which will be effective until the end of their term in 2004.

The draft, he said, aims to search for a political compromise so that there would be no need to declare a state of emergency in the country or hold a special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).

Megawati reportedly said on Friday night that it is for the MPR to decide on the delegation of power, arguing that accepting it would be a violation of the Constitution.

Wahid also repeated that if he resigns, such troubled provinces as Aceh and Irian Jaya, as well as East Java will proclaim independence.

The threat from the three provinces to separate from Indonesia should not be considered unimportant, the president added.

Separately, the Indonesian Defense Force (TNI) spokesman Rear Adm. Graito Usodo said that the TNI will fully support a political compromise among members of the political elite.

"We (TNI) will support moves to find the best solution, but we will always put the nation's interests above all," he told Antara in Lampung province on Saturday.
