Indonesia's PDI-P Rejects President's OfferThe Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Saturday morning officially rejected a transfer of power deal proposed by President Abdurrahman Wahid on Friday afternoon, according to the party Secretary-General Pramono Anung. The decision was made at a five-hour meeting of party executives at its chief Megawati Soekarnoputri's residence in Central Jakarta on Friday night, Anung was quoted by the Metro TV television station Saturday as saying. Co-chairman of the PDI-P executive board Roy B. Jannis told reporters on Friday night that it was for the People's Consultative Assembly to decide a delegation of power from Wahid to Vice President Megawati. If Megawati accepted the proposal, she would be violating the Constitution, he added. Commenting on the PDI-P's decision, presidential spokesman Adhi Masardi told the Metro TV that there was no response from the president till now. Wahid was reportedly threatening to impose a state of national emergency should impeachment proceedings against him proceed. The Jakarta Post quoted sources as saying that the president warned that a state of emergency decree could be issued on Saturday if no response was given by Saturday morning.
