Sri Lanka Decides Not to Privatize Universities

The Sri Lankan cabinet of ministers decided on Thursday not to have private universities in the war- torn country, the state-run Daily News reported on Saturday.

The cabinet has also decided that all universities in the country will continue to remain under the aegis of the state. The government will not enact new legislation or amend the Universities' act.

Minister of Higher Education and Information Technology Indika Gunawardena said that government's position on this matter was firm and it was absolutely unfair for the JVP or People's Liberation Front sponsored trade unions to conduct agitational campaigns and also mislead the university student population.

He also exhorted university students not to be misled by what he called bankrupt malevolent political elements who are pursing their own agendas.
