ROK Suggests Energy Cooperation in Northeast Asia

A lawyer from the Republic of Korea (ROK) suggested the setup of an energy cooperation organization in northeast Asia would ensure a stable energy supply in the region.

Kim Soung Soo, who has a doctorate degree in law, made the suggestion at the 10th International Conference on Energy Laws sponsored by LawAsia, a law organization made up of lawyers in Asia and the Pacific region, which ended here last week.

The doctor said the establishment of the North-east Asia Energy Cooperation Institute will benefit the region with a sufficient and stable energy supply.

The institute's member countries are expected to include China, the ROK, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, Russia, the United States and Canada.

The ROK held talks upon the proposal with China and Japan at the conference and it had talks with Russia, the United States and Canada before, leaving only the DPRK on the list for possible talks, according to Soo.

He indicated that the ROK was planing to build a gas pipeline from Siberia in Russian through China and the DPRK, finally reaching the ROK.

LawAsia decided the 11th conference on energy laws will be in Seoul in October 2003.
