Combinatorial Chemistry Lab Founded in Shanghai

The Shanghai Medicine Research Combinatorial Chemistry Lab, which was founded by the Shanghai Medicine Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in cooperation with GlaxoSmithKline, the British drugs giant, was opened recently.

A spokesman for the lab claimed that the new establishment is the most advanced combinatorial chemistry research organization in China.

According to the spokesman, the new lab will mainly engage in composite research of compounds needed for the development of new medicines.

Combinatorial chemistry has enormously raised the speed and efficiency of composing compounds by changing the traditional method of composing compounds singly and speeding up the process of new medicine research by changing the medicine researchers' way of thinking.

GlaxoSmithKline, also the world's top supplier of AIDS drugs, chalked up about 23.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of sales last year.

The spokesman added that the cooperation between GlaxoSmithKline and the Shanghai Medicine Institute, one of the best research organizations in China, would not only improve China 's capacity to develop new medicines, but also benefit both partners.
