NE China City Wants to Copy Pudong's SuccessShenyang, an old industrial city in northeast China, plans to copy the successful Pudong New District of Shanghai, by building a new district in line with international standards. The new district in this capital of Liaoning Province is named "Hunnan New District" and it will be located on the southern bank of the Hunhe River. According to a government plan, the new district will cover an area of 120.6 square kilometers and it will be an environmentally friendly place with modern facilities and a population of between 300,000 and 500,000. The building of the new district is regarded by local officials as a major step to usher in rapid development in the city in the new century. It is expected to become a new attraction for international investors and a comfortable home for high-tech companies, according to the plan. Currently, the city government has invested more than 100 million yuan in constructing a forest park along the Hunhe River and plans to invest another 50 million yuan to build a bridge over the river. The new district will be home to a number of high-tech zones, an automotive manufacturing and development center, and a " university city" to house a cluster of higher learning institutions, as well as residential blocks and a full range of urban facilities. Moreover, it will also become a new tourist destination. Duan Ran, an expert from Shenzhen, noted that Shanghai and Shenzhen have succeeded in developing new areas according to market demands. Shenyang should try hard to become a financial and business center in the northeast, he suggested.
