Venezuelan President Meets Chinese Academic Leaders

Visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias met in Beijing Friday with Li Tieying, President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Song Jian, President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Bai Chunli, Deputy president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the meeting, the leading Chinese academicians briefed Chavez on the functions and work of their respective institutes. The two sides also discussed academic exchanges and cooperation between China and Venezuela.

Chavez was today awarded a honorary doctoral degree of economics by the University of International Business and Economics at a ceremony attended by Chinese minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng.

Chavez arrived in Beijing Thursday for a state visit.
