Chinese Defense Minister Meets Canadian Military Leader

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian said Friday that he hopes China and Canada will continue to expand their military exchanges and cooperation.

Chi, who is also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, made the remarks in a meeting with Joseph Baril, chief of the Defense Staff of Canada.

He said that China attaches great importance to its relations with Canada, which is an important country in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chi noted that the bilateral ties have been progressing well with concerted efforts from both sides and the military contacts have also shown good momentum.

Chi said that he believes Baril's visit will surely further the mutual understanding and the friendly cooperation between the two military forces.

Baril said that China has been playing an important role in maintaining the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. He said the he hopes the two countries will further consolidate and develop their military cooperation.
