Macao's Population Grows

The estimated population stood at 439, 000 in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on March 31, 2001, 4,000-odd more than a year earlier, according to the latest official statistics.

Figures released by the Statistics and Census Services show that the number of immigrants from China's inland to Macao reached 2,200 in the first quarter of this year.

By the end of March, the SAR had granted the residential rights to 24,500 people in total, while the number of nonlocal labor force amounted to 25,800.

A total of 828 babies were born and 353 people died in Macao from January to March, the sources said.

Macao's population has been on the increase over the past few years.
