S. Lanka's Opposition Agrees to Caretaker Govt During Elections
Sri Lanka's opposition political parties Wednesday worked out modalities to bring amendments to the constitution to have a caretaker government during elections and for the establishment of an effective Media Commission to control the state media, The Island newspaper reported Friday.
They also agreed to the setting up of four independent commissions on elections, police, judiciary and public service.
The opposition parties that participated in the discussions were the United National Party, the JVP or People's Liberation Front, Tamil United Liberation Front and the All Ceylon Tamil Congress.
It was suggested that the caretaker government should consist of members elected to the Parliament from both sides.
Concerning a Media Commission it was agreed that a separate law be enacted to provide for a mechanism for the implementation of powers over the state media.
