Strong Quake Hits Eastern Hokkaido

A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the open-ended Richter scale jolted eastern Hokkaido in northeastern Japan on Friday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no reports of casualties or damage from quake, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake, which occurred at 9:41 a.m. (Japan time), was also felt in several localities in Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan, the agency said.

The epicenter of the quake was in waters off Etorofu Island, one of the four Russian-held islands claimed by Japan, the agency said.
