New .Biz Domain Names on Offer

The Internet Corporation for Assignment Names and Numbers (ICANN) encouraged Wednesday Chinese enterprises and individuals active to apply for desired domain names at .biz -- the world's first Internet address dedicated exclusively to the needs of the business community worldwide.

The introduction of .biz is among the first new generic top-level domains (TLD) introduced by the ICANN since the creation of .com, .net, and .org 15 years ago.

The .biz TLD will be restricted to those businesses and individuals who intend to use the address for commercial or business purpose.

The registry of .biz, currently scheduled to go live in October 2001, requires businesses or individuals stake a claim to domain name based on a trademark in which they have rights by filling an IP (Intellectual Property) Claim with an ICANN-acrredited registrar.

Random allocation will be used to determine winner among more than one eligible registrants for the same .biz domain name, sources said.

"The Internet's uncontrolled growth has created a chaotic business environment. We believe that .biz will help create a new world order for business," said Douglas B. Armentrout, CEO of Neulevel, Inc., the neutral, third-party responsible for the creation, maintenance and serving of the .biz TLD.

In addition to .biz, ICANN will launches worldwide 6 more new TLDs of .info, .name, .pro, .aero, .coop, and .museum.
