CPP, FUNCINPEC Sign Joint Statement on Commune Elections

The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and FUNCINPEC Party signed a Joint Statement on Commune Elections Thursday afternoon here in the Ministry of Interior.

CPP President Chea Sim and FUNCINPEC President Norodom Ranariddh inked the joint statement.

The cooperation between the CPP and the FUNCINPEC has been developing well and has won the support of international community since the two parties reached a cooperation agreement on November 23�� 1998, the joint statement said.

Under the brilliant leadership of King Norodom Sihanouk, the cooperation of the two parties has made encouraging achievements in the national economic development, it noted.

The two parties said they will ensure that the commune elections in February 2002 will proceed in transparency, equity, non-violence and non-foreign pressure through further strengthening their cooperation in various departments of the government. They welcome other political parties in the country and international community to send observers to supervise the elections.

They have pledged that the two parties will fully implement the law of commune elections and compete in a equitable way in line with multi-party system.
