FBI Arrests 62 Web Fraud Suspects

A total of 88 people were charged and 62 arrested in a nationwide operation against computer fraud suspects, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

Codenamed "Operation Cyber Loss," law enforcement agencies launched the operation against alleged cyber criminals in 28 US cities, the FBI said. The suspects were responsible for an estimated 117 million dollars in losses for more than 56,000 victims.

Authorities said Wednesday's announcement should serve as a warning to Internet users that criminals are aggressively exploiting the online world, where it's easy to attract consumers and hide an identity.

Operation Cyber Loss involves more than 60 separate investigations resulting in variety of charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and bank fraud.

All the investigations started as a result of complaints received by the Internet Fraud Complaint Center over the past year. The center is a joint operation between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, a nonprofit, government-funded organization which assists law enforcement agencies in fighting computer and economic crime.
