Yunnan Police Destroys 47,000 Illicit Guns

Police in southwest China's Yunnan Province recently destroyed 17,000 illicit guns for military use and another 30,000 for civilian use.

Because of historical and social factors, individuals and institutions in Yunnan still hold a large amount of guns for civilian use, thus posing a serious potential threat to social security.

Gun-related crimes such as producing and trafficking, transport, smuggling and sale of guns are rampant in the province.

In a special campaign to crack down on crimes related to guns and explosives between April 18 and May 10, Yunnan police confiscated 604 guns of various kinds, 47 grenades, 29 bombs, as well as 19,625 kilograms of explosives, 61,943 detonators, 20,371 meters of fuses and 1,121 knives subject to police control.

The police also cracked a host of major cases in connection with guns and explosives and smashed some gun-making workshops.

On May 6 alone, officers of the Public Security Bureau of Shizong Bureau destroyed six gun-producing workshops and confiscated 14 home-made powder guns, ten semi-finished guns, 24 gun tubes and a large amount of raw materials for making guns.
