Trade Fair in West China Lures Foreign Businesses

Some 1300 foreign businessmen have registered to take part in a large trade fair starting Friday, which is co-sponsored by the governments of the southwestern province of Sichuan and Hong Kong, sources said.

The fair consists of four parts: product exhibition and trading, investment talks and seminars, displays of electronic and information products and technologies, and food and clothing, according to the organizing committee.

The committee said the businessmen come from 26 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Venezuelan President Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, heading a 60- member delegation, will attend and give a speech during the fair. His ministers will hold talks with provincial officials on agriculture, farm machinery, labor service exports and hydropower programs, according to the committee.

Officials from embassies and consulates of Britain, France, Japan and the United States will also attend the fair.

Titled the 2001 West China Economic and Trade Fair, the event is jointly sponsored by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Sichuan Provincial Government.
