Shanghai VW: Prices for Santana/Passat to Remain Unchanged in Near Future

Latest news from Shanghai Volkswagen says that prices for Santana and Passat, its two pillar products, will remain unchanged in the foreseeable future.

Spokesman of Shanghai VW made the remark following the State Development Planning Commission's decision allowing carmakers full latitude based on supply-demand and enterprise stratagems in car pricing While maintaining steady prices, Shanghai VW would keep its focus on improving quality and promoting sales and after-sale service.

The car prices set by government in early 90s was to protect manufacturers of late start and prevent market monopoly by bigger enterprises. Now carmakers are allowed to adjust prices by themselves so as to stir up market competition and domestic car consumption.

Many people, inside and outside the auto industry, worried the pricing relaxation would trigger a new round of price war. While the spokesman says price of domestic cars has been gradually brought into the world track since 1998. The state policy will not cast any substantial impact on market price and further cause big price fluctuation.

As China's biggest sedan car production base, Shanghai VW has been working hard to apply more technologies in manufacturing and put out new models to meet market demand. During the first four months this year its sales grew 45 percent over the same period last year. After it unveiled Santana 2000 GLI not long ago, a new fourth-generation product named "Polo" will also be rolled off the line this year.
