Chinese Vice-Premier Meets Spanish Foreign MinisterChinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said Wednesday that China is ready to make concerted efforts with Spain for the smooth development of Sino-Spanish relations in the new century.Qian made the remark in a meeting with visiting Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique, who is also scheduled to attend the Foreign Ministers' meeting of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Qian said that Sino-Spanish relations are making sound development and the frequent exchanges of visits and contacts between leaders of the two countries have played a very important role in the development of bilateral relations. The two countries' economic and trade cooperation has achieved remarkable results, and new progress is being made in exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, science and technology, Qian said. He said China is satisfied with the development of bilateral relations. As China is the biggest developing country and Spain is an important member of the European Union (EU) enjoying a rapid economic development in recent years, there are vast potentials for bilateral cooperation in various fields. Pique said he was impressed with China's great changes since his last visit to the country four years ago. He expressed admiration for Chinese people's achievements. Pique said bilateral relations are developing well and Spain has always adopted a friendly attitude towards China. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been fruitful and Spain's investment in China is expanding, Pique said. He said his country will try to make the development of bilateral economic and trade cooperation as good as bilateral political relations. He said that Spain will continue to take a friendly, candid and constructive attitude towards further developing the two countries ' friendly cooperation in various fields. Briefing the visitors on China's strategy for the development of its western areas, Qian welcomed more Spanish business people to take part in the development of China's central and western areas. Both sides also exchanged views on major international issues. Qian expressed hope that Spain could play an even bigger role in international and European affairs.
