Zhao Wei Wins Women's Hammer Throw for China

China's Zhao Wei threw 63.98 meters to win in the women's hammer throw, the first gold in the track and field competitions which started in rain on Wednesday in the East Asian Games here.

Zhao had the best record in the final sixth round to overtake teammate Liu Yinghui, who took the silver with a fifth-round mark of 63.12 meters.

"I planned to break the Asian record of 65.70, but the weather is not good," said Zhao, who set the Asian record last year in China.

The best result of the event was Australia's Bronwyn Eagles' 67.08 meters, but her result was not counted into the final standings as guest status.

Masumi Aya of Japan took the bronze medal with 60.27 meters.

In the men's pole vault final, Manabu Yokoyama of Japan cleared 5.60 meters to win the gold, with Chinese Xu Gang at second with 5.20 meters and Satoru Yasuda of Japan third with the same mark.
