Megawati Discusses Wahid's Attitude with Party Team

Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri, in her capacity as the chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Struggle Party (PDI-P), Tuesday held a meeting with a party team tasked to formulate its formal view on President Abdurrahman Wahid's attitude following the issuance of a second House of Representatives memorandum of censure against him.

The two-hour meeting was held at Megawati's residence in Central Jakarta, according to the Antara News Agency.

The president has so far not given a special response to the House's second memorandum, which was issued on April 30 and in effect repeated the main issues for which the House served its first memorandum on him, namely his alleged involvement in two financial scandals.

Kwik Kian Gie, a member of the team, said, if the president failed to give a positive response to the House's second censure, the PDI-P should propose the holding of a special People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).

Separately, PDI-P also held a central executive board meeting here Tuesday.

"Let us wait whether within the next eight days the president will still give a positive response," the party Deputy Secretary General Pramono Anung said after the meeting.

He said Tuesday's party board meeting did not discuss the possibility of Megawati ascending the presidency to hold the office until 2004.

The party's view would be presented at the House's plenary session scheduled for May 30.
