Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao voiced his belief Wednesday that Sino-Thai relations of good neighbors, mutual trust, friendship and comprehensive cooperation will expand in the new century through efforts by both sides.

Hu, also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, told the visiting Sampao Choosri, supreme commander of the Thai armed forces, that China and Thailand have enjoyed a long-term traditional friendship.

He said that no matter what changes have taken place in the world and in the two countries, China-Thailand relations have developed in a healthy and stable way.

Hu mentioned that Thai Queen Sirikit visited China on behalf of King Bhumibol Adulyadej last year, Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong not long ago, and Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji paid a successful visit to Thailand recently.

The exchange of visits has injected vitality into the bilateral relations in the new century, Hu said.

He said China-Thailand relations can serve as an example of friendly coexistence between states with different social systems, and expressed appreciation for the support of the Thai government on the Taiwan and human rights issues.

Sino-Thailand military contacts, an important component of the state-to-state relations, add new concepts for bilateral ties, Hu noted.

Sampao said that the Thai and Chinese armed forces have maintained close contact, and the two sides conducted sound cooperation in many fields, and through cooperation, the two sides have promoted mutual understanding and friendship.

He said that his current visit is aimed at promoting high-level contacts between the two armed forces and furthering the existing friendly relations.

Sampao also noted that Thailand supports China's 2008 Olympic games bid. Hu expressed gratitude for the support.
