10 Navy Sailor Killed in Bus Ambush in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels ambushed a navy bus in northeast of the country on Wednesday, killing 10 and wounding 17 sailors, a military spokesman said.

A powerful landmine exploded as the bus passed the village of Thampalagamam along the main road to the port town of Trincomalee.

Military spokesman Sanath karunaratne said that reinforcements were rushed to the area and those who were wounded in the blast had been evacuated to a nearby hospital.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country since 1983 for an independent Tamil homeland. The bloody war has killed more than 60,000 people.
