Chinese Prisoners Get Legal, Financial Assistance

Prisoners in China are getting more and more access to assistance from lawyers, when they are found to be in financial troubles, according to official reports.

The Legal Assistance Center of Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, east China, recently opened two offices in the Jinan Prison and the Jinan Transformation-Through-Labor House, in order to help the prisoners protect their legal rights.

In Anshan city, northeast China's Liaoning Province, the Anshan Prison has established a poverty-relief fund especially for inmates from poor families who make up half of the total number of prisoners there.

On the eve of May Day this year, when the guards learned that the daughter of one of the prisoners, whose surname is Yuan, was very poor, they gave 500 yuan to the girl.

"In the future, I must behave well in order to get back into society as early as possible and become a useful person," said a weeping Yuan.
