US to Launch Asian Internet Portal in Manila to Boost TradeThe United States Tuesday announced a global Internet portal in Asia aimed at boosting trade by linking American exporters with business partners around the world. The portal would be formally introduced in Manila on Thursday at CommAsia 2001, a regional exhibition covering the telecommunications, broadcast, electronics and information technology fields, Jerry Mitchell, acting director general of the U.S. Commercial Service, told a news conference in Manila via video link-up from Washington. The Philippines was chosen as the website's launching pad because of the expanding bilateral trade and investment ties, among other reasons. The United States is the largest market for Philippine exports and the number one investor in Manila. Total bilateral trade amounted to 23 billion dollars last year. Mitchell said Washington would be rolling out BuyUSA.com in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia, among other economies in the region. From BuyUSA.com, one can gather company and product information, arrange live or virtual meetings with suppliers, shop for payment and financing alternatives and make the final shipping and insurance arrangements.
