Mitchell Report Should Not Be Partially Interpreted: Palestinians

The Palestinian leadership on Tuesday evening said that they would not allow any partial interpretation of the Mitchell report which calls for a cessation of violence and a freeze on settlement activities.

In a statement the Palestinian leadership expressed disappointment over Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's " objection to Mitchell report."

Sharon stuck to his previous position on expanding settlement activity, imposing fait accompli and rejecting agreements signed between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, the statement said.

The Palestinians also urged peace sponsors and members of the international inquiry commission chaired by former US senator George Mitchell to hold an emergency meeting to set up mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of recommendations made by the report and an Egyptian-Jordanian initiative on ending the conflicts and avoid unilateral interpretations.

They further urged the international community to immediately intervene to stop Israeli atrocities, escalation and blockade against the Palestinian people.

On Tuesday evening, Sharon urged the Palestinians to immediately halt violence and return to the negotiating table. But he rejected a full freeze on settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories as recommended by the international inquiry commission.
