Iran Holds Mass Funeral for Martyrs of War with Iraq

With tearful eyes, Iranians, from all walk of life in different parts of the country, have come to the capital of Tehran since early Tuesday morning to bid farewell to 1, 000 martyrs killed in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mohammad Khatami were among the mourners to laud the martyrs for their sacrifice during the bloody war, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The remains of the martyrs have recently been recovered and their coffins were brought to the biggest praying hall in Tehran late Monday.

According to an Iranian estimate, about one million people are thought to have been killed or wounded during the eight-year Iran- Iraq war.

Since 1988, Iranian search teams have uncovered remains of 48, 000 Iranian soldiers killed in both Iranian and Iraqi territories.
