Kenyan Parliament Speaker Meets Chinese Delegation
The Kenyan National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo met Tuesday in Nairobi with a Chinese broadcasting delegation headed by Xu Guangchun, director of China' s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
Kaparo warmly welcomed the delegation's visit to Kenya and pleasantly recalled his visit to China last year, saying that during his stay in China, he witnessed the rapid development of China.
He thanked China for its support to Kenya in various areas, saying that Kenya and China have a historic friendship and that he looks forward to further exchanges with China's National People's Congress, China's parliament.
"Both parliaments represent the interests of their respective peoples, therefore, the exchanges between the two top legislatures will not only promote the friendship of the two countries, but further the understanding of the two peoples as well," Kaparo said.
He promised that he will send more Assembly members to China to exchange points of views on bilateral and international issues with their Chinese counterparts.
He noted that Kenya and China can help each other in many ways, saying that if each of the more than 1.2 billion Chinese people buy one bag of Kenyan tea or if 0.1 percent of them come to visit Kenya, the country's economy would be greatly boosted.
He asked Xu to convey his best regard to Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress.
Xu said that the friendship between China and Kenya started from the old-generation of leaders of the two countries, and such close relationship has been constantly enhanced.
"The successful visit to Kenya by Chinese President Jiang Zemin in 1996 has pushed such relationship to a new height," Xu said.
He noted that China and Kenya are both developing countries and the two countries should strengthen their cooperation for peace and development of the world.
"China is, indeed, developing at high speed, but China will never forget its old friends even if it becomes stronger," Xu noted, adding that he hoped the two countries will become more prosperous through cooperation.
Xu also briefed Kaparo on his meeting with his Kenyan counterpart Mudavadi, saying that the two countries have great potential in broadcasting sector among others.
On Monday, Xu and Mudavadi signed an agreement on the cooperation between the two nations' broadcasting sectors, in which both governments agree to further their cooperation by exchange of technology and T.V. programs, and China also promises to offer more human resources training opportunities for Kenya.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Du Qiwen were present at both meetings.
