Chinese Defense Minister Meets Thai Guests

China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Thailand and its armed forces, and the ongoing visit by Sampao Choosri, supreme commander of Thai armed forces, will surely help further the existing friendly relations between the two countries.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian made the remarks Tuesday at a meeting with Sampao.

Chi, also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that he has visited or transited through Thailand six times, and he was glad to see Thailand recovering from the Asia financial crisis when he traveled through Thailand in February this year during his visit to South Asia.

He noted that the Chinese and Thai armed forces have conducted cooperation in all fields, and the Chinese military will continue to push forward the relations with its Thai counterparts.

Sampao expressed gratitude for China's aid to Thailand, saying he hoped to cooperate with China in cracking down on drug crimes and other fields.

Chief of General Staff Holds Talks with Thai Guests

No matter what changes have taken place in the international arena, China and Thailand have maintained stable and healthy relations, and become an example of friendly co-existence between states with different social systems.

Fu Quanyou, chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, made the remarks here Tuesday in talks with Sampao Choosri, supreme commander of the Thai armed forces.

Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, said that the Chinese government thanks the Thai government for the support on the Taiwan and Tibet issues, and is ready to join with Thailand to build up the Sino-Thai friendly relations in the new century.

He noted that as an important component of the state-to-state relations, the Sino-Thai military relations have developed smoothly.

The Chinese and Thai armed forces have promoted mutual understanding and trust through enhancing contacts and exchanges, thus furthering the Sino-Thai relations and helping safeguard regional security and stability.

Sampao said that Thailand and China have maintained close contact in the military and other fields, and the just-concluded visit by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji to Thailand has also the more promoted the bilateral relations.

He noted that Thailand is always ready to make efforts to develop the bilateral relations between the two countries and the two armies.
