Senior CPC Official Meets European Parliament DelegationWei Jianxing, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of CPC Central Committee, made the remark Tuesday afternoon in a meeting with a delegation from the EP Socialist Group led by its chairman Enrique Baron Crespo. Speaking positively of Sino-European relations, Wei said that since China and the European Communities forged formal relations in 1975, they have conducted fruitful exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as politics, economy and culture, and bilateral relations have become increasingly close. In recent years in particular, leaders of the two sides, eyeing the 21st century, have paid more attention to the joint interests of both sides and made efforts to establish an all-round bilateral partnership facing the new century, noted Wei. He cited that in politics, there have been regular meetings between leaders of the two sides, more and more high-level exchanges and noticeably increasing consultations and cooperation in international affairs; and in economy and trade, spheres of bilateral cooperation have been expanding with their high economic complementarity, and there is still vast potential. China is satisfied with the good development momentum of Sino- European relations, pointed out Wei. China and Europe are important powers in the international arena, shouldering major responsibilities for world peace, stability and development, said Wei, noting that they share similar views on and common interests in many major international issues although their histories, cultural traditions and social systems are different. It is not only in the interests of the two sides but also conducive to promoting multi-polarization of the world and human peace and development for both China and Europe to seek common ground while reserving differences and strengthening cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, equality, reciprocity, dialogue and non-confrontation, he pointed out. Wei said that China attaches great importance to the development of friendship and cooperation with the European Union (EU) and its member states, holds a positive view on the integration process of Europe, and is willing to see a bigger role played by the EU in international affairs. In the new century, Wei said, he hoped that the EP and leaders of all EP party groups including the Socialist Group can, from a strategic height and the general situation of the development of Sino-European relations, continue to do more to benefit bilateral ties, and thus play a constructive role in the development of bilateral relations. Baron Crespo said that the EP actively pushes forward the development of Europe-China relations, which is a result of the common points shared by the two sides in international affairs and bilateral relations. Both sides support a multi-polar world, not a uni-polar world manipulated by one superpower, and an improvement of the status and role of the United Nations in international affairs, he said. Crespo went on to say that the EP highly appreciated China's correct policy concerning the Asian financial crisis which occurred several years ago, and it is delighted to see China's great modernization achievements, social stability and the improvement of people's lives. The EP will make joint efforts with China to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, trade and finance, and will make even greater efforts to promote an overall development of Europe-China relations.
