China Benefits From International Anti-Narcotics Projects: Official

A dozen international anti-narcotics projects have made a positive impact on China's narcotics control work, said a senior Chinese official Monday.

Some of the projects have been completed while others are still being implemented. The rest have been signed and are ready to be carried out, covering some areas as anti-narcotics law enforcement, reduction of drug demands, the management of chemicals for producing drugs, and the substituting narcotics plantation with legal cash crops.

Wang Qianrong, deputy director of the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security, made the remarks this afternoon while making a presentation to a visiting delegation from the United Nation's donor countries on global narcotics control work.

He said that certain cooperative projects did help solve some thorny problems faced by China's anti-narcotics forces, such as upgrading telecommunication and traffic facilities, improving analyzing capabilities on tip-offs, and reducing the demand for drugs in some areas.

While affirming the fruitfulness of those projects in general, the official expressed his hope that more efforts are needed to help reach agreements on certain projects which are very important.

He said that the six countries adjacent to the Golden Triangle Area, including China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Kampuchea, and Vietnam, are all developing countries which need international help to improve their anti-narcotics means and capabilities.

"This is work which gets twice the result with half the effort," he assured.

The official added that, as a major sufferer of narcotics and a major member in the global community, China will continue to make relentless efforts to fight against narcotics.
