Iran Expects Solution to Maritime Border Dispute with Kuwait
A senior Iranian official expressed hope here Monday that a satisfactory solution would be reached between Iran and Kuwait over the demarcation of their maritime border in northern Gulf.
Speaking to reporters before concluding his five-day visit to Kuwait, Iran's Vice President Mohammad Ali Sadooqi said the issue was being studied by special technical committees of the two countries.
He said that he discussed the issue concerning the continental shelf on the fringes of his talks with Kuwaiti officials.
The area, where an oil field named al-Dorra is located, is claimed by Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Gulf Arab states Kuwait and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement to settle their dispute last July.
But little progress has been reported after several rounds of talks in this respect between Iran and Kuwait.
On his visit to Kuwait, Sadooqi, who takes care of Iran's legal and parliamentary affairs, said it is "significant."
He pointed to the important cooperation between the two countries in all spheres, especially the exchanges of parliamentary expertise.
These exchanges, he said, could contribute to the enrichment and enhancement of both countries' ambitions in the parliamentary process.
