Iraqi People Suffered From Radiation of Depleted Uranium: Minister

Iraqi people are exposed to high radiation doses of Depleted Uranium (DU) exceeding the limits set by the international organizations for public exposure to radiation, Iraqi Health Minister O. M. Mubarak said Monday in Geneva.

Speaking at a news briefing of the ongoing World Health Assembly, Mubarak said that there could be no way of controlling the exposure of people who are present in the area or people living in that area for hundreds of years to come after the end of the Gulf War when DU ammunitions were used in an open environment.

Mubarak said that this would explain the increase in cancer cases and hereditary defects in Iraq.

He urged the international community to put emphasis on screening or monitoring possible DU-related health problems in the Iraqi population.

Depleted uranium is a radioactive material which damages the health of people who are exposed to the radiation.
