Macao to Build Large Fisherman's WharfConstruction work will start soon on a fisherman's wharf, covering an area of roughly 140,000 square meters, at the southeastern tip of Macao Peninsular.This will be the largest tourist project for the special administrative region (SAR) since Macao returned to the motherland at the end of 1999. The total investment for the wharf is estimated at more than 900 million patacas (112.5 million US dollars). It will be built into a tourist attraction with the combination of recreation, sight-seeing and catering, according to Ao Man Long, secretary for public works and transport. He said that a part of the wharf, with a coverage of more than 50,000 square meters, will be the land reclaimed on the sea. Leighton Asia, an Australian company with vast overseas experience and setup, signed an agreement recently with the SAR government to participate in the construction of the wharf. It is hoped that Leighton would cooperate and complement with the local architects and designers, in order to complete the project within the time frame of two years, which would benefit Macao's tourism industry with a new attraction, said David Chow, chief executive officer of the Macao Fisherman's Wharf International Investment Ltd. |
