Russian Rocket Carries Cargo Ship

A Progress M1-6 cargo ship was launched into orbit early Monday from the Baikonur cosmodrome, carrying fuel and other supplies to the international space station.

The Soyuz-FG rocket blasted off at 2:33 a.m. Moscow time from the launch site Russia leases in Kazakstan, said Vera Medvedkova, spokeswoman for Mission Control outside Moscow.

It is scheduled to dock with the space station at 4:19 a.m. Moscow time Wednesday, Medvedkova said.

Almost half of the 2,750-ton cargo is fuel. The Progress ship is also carrying food, water and parcels for the crew, as well as parts for the station's life-support systems, the Interfax news agency reported.
