Coal Mine Explosion Kills 8 in Southwest ChinaAt least eight miners were killed and seven others are missing after a coal mine gas explosion in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province Sunday.The 15 miners were working underground, when the explosion occurred at the Shilin Coal Mine, in Guang'an, at around 10:20 a.m. Immediately after the incident took place, the city government set up an emergency headquarters, headed by a vice mayor, to direct rescue efforts which include three rescue teams. The coal mine is small, with an annual output capacity of 150,000 tons, according to local sources. Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China, has ordered all small coal mines to be shut down to prevent safety problems. |
