Forum on Peaceful Reunification Held in HK
A forum dedicated to promoting China's peaceful reunification was held here Sunday by the Hong Kong Region China Peaceful Reunification Association.

As part of the massive movement that aimed at opposing "Taiwan independence" and promoting China's reunification launched by Chinese people all over the world, the forum drew participation of some 60 people from all walks of life in Hong Kong.

Participants agreed that the new Taiwan leaders had made further steps on the path of the "Taiwan independence" since they came to power one year ago.

The new Taiwan leader let alone the "Taiwan independence" forces, made no recognition of the one China principle and seriously violated the interests of all Chinese people including Taiwan compatriots, they added.

Chen Fengying, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said there are more than 80 pro-reunification organizations around the world including Hong Kong, forming a worldwide coalition front that has greatly curbed the separatist forces and has helped maintain a stable cross-Straits relations.

He noted the "one country, two systems" principle has witnessed great success in Hong Kong in the past three years.

The Hong Kong experience indicates the feasibility of the "one country, two systems" principle and the Chinese people are determined and confident about a complete reunification of the motherland, he added.

Tung-hai Lee, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the new Taiwan leaders rejected the one China principle and denied the 1992 understanding, and as a result leading to the deteriorating of the cross-Straits relations.

The Taiwan island also witnessed deeper political crisis and increasing unemployment rate, he added.

As an entrepreneur, Lee pointed out that the policy of restraining the Taiwan investment in the mainland will hinder the trend of economic and trade development between both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and make Taiwan lose the business opportunities in the mainland amid the intensive global competition.

The western region development of the mainland provides Taiwan with a broad sphere for its economic expansion, and as a matter of course, Taiwan should be the biggest beneficiary, he said.

Lee noted that the future of Taiwan lies in the reunification, and only under the one China principle can both sides of the Taiwan Straits achieve a sustainable economic exchanges, adding that this will be a win-win result.
