Sonia Gandhi Pays Homage to Husband and Former PM, Rajiv Gandhi

India's main opposition Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi, on Monday paid floral tributes and chanted prayers on the 10th anniversary of the death of her husband and former prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

She was accompanied by her daughter, Priyanka, along with hundreds of Congress leaders and regional government ministers who gathered for the solemn occassion early in the morning in New Delhi at Rajiv Gandhi's memorial.

Indian President K.R. Narayanan, along with Vice-President Krishna Kant, paid homage and all those gathered, including Gandhi and her family, silently took a round of the memorial in a procession at the end of the meeting.

Congress workers, clad in white and some holding posters of Rajiv Gandhi, raised slogans saying Rajiv Gandhi was immortal and his name would be etched in history forever.

Rajiv Gandhi died on May 21, 1991, when a woman assassin, with bombs strapped on her body, triggerred off a powerful blast near the former prime minister at an election campaign gathering.
