Seventh World Print Congress Opens in Beijing

Seventh World Print Congress Opens in Beijing
The World Print Congress (WPC) began its 7th meeting Monday, when Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing announced the opening of the congress and delivered a speech to the meeting.

Up to 3,000 delegates from 25 countries and regions are attending the meeting and will discuss related issues on the main theme of "challenges of the knowledge economy to the print industry in the 21st century".

Li Lanqing, who is also honorary president of the 7th WPC, said in his speech that printing is a symbol of human civilization and a stepping stone for social advancement. It has not only played a big role in pushing forward the development of China's ancient and glorious history and culture, but also exerted important and far-reaching influence on civilization and advancement of human society as a whole.

He said that at the turn of the century, the new and scientific revolution represented by information technology is developing fast, economic globalization is progressing at an accelerated speed, and the age of knowledge economy has arrived. For the global printing industry, this is both a severe challenge and a rare opportunity.

"Innovation is the power source for human progress that never exhausts. As an important and unique industry for spreading knowledge and civilization, traditional printing will experience all-round innovation and transformation with the help of new scientific and technologic means, so as to gain room and new vitality for extensive development," he said.

Li said that, as the world's largest developing country, China will continue to open up with an even more active attitude, and participate in economic globalization in a broader field.

The targets in China's 10th five-year plan (2001-2005) are an important basis for China's rejuvenation within this century, indicating an even greater development of China's economy and its printing industry, he said.

"Printing has been accompanied by civilization since the day it was invented, and the printing industry will surely play an increasingly important role in the development of China's socialist material and spiritual civilization. The world's printing industry surely has a bright future," Li said.

Before the opening ceremony of the congress, Li Lanqing met with entrepreneurs, experts and scholars from the international printing circles.

Director of the China's General Administration of Press and Publication and President of the Organization Committee of the 7th WPC Shi Zongyuan expressed a warm welcome to delegates from all over the world.

The five-day meeting will conclude on May 25. The 5th Beijing International Printing Technology Exposition and the First Asian-Pacific Screen Printing Exposition are being held concurrently.

The newly-renovated China Printing Museum has also opened its doors to guests from all over the world.
