Work Starts on Mt. Huangshan-Hangzhou Expressway

The construction of an expressway linking Mt.Huangshan in Anhui Province and Hangzhou City in neighboring Zhejiang Province has started.

Zheng Jizhong, head of the Bureau of Communications of Huangshan City, said the Anhui section of the four-lane expressway will run 82 km from the Tunxi District of the city to Yulingguan Pass on the border of the two provinces.

The section is expected to cost 1.657 billion yuan and to be completed at the end of 2003.

The 115-km Zhejiang section of the expressway is now a first-grade highway and remains to be upgraded to an expressway.

Mt. Huangshan and Hangzhou are both leading tourists attractions in east China, receiving four million and 24 million visitors a year, respectively.

The increasing number of tourists has led to frequent traffic jams on the existing Huangshan-Hangzhou highway over recent years.

The planned expressway will reduce the trip from Huangshan to Hangzhou from six to three hours. It will also be linked to the Shanghai-Hangzhou and the Hangzhou-Ningbo expressways.
