A total of 188 new companies were set up in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in the first quarter of this year, 16.8 percent more than the same period of last year, the latest official statistics show.
Figures released by the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government show that the new companies involved a total capital volume of 74.6 million patacas (9.3 million US dollars), 3.6 times that of the new companies between January and March in 2000.
Among the new businesses, 80 were registered to deal in wholesale and retail sales, and other sectors that report new firms include industrial and commercial service, real estate and construction.
On the other hand, 17 companies were closed in the three-month period, involving a capital volume of 217 million patacas (27.1 million U.S. dollars).
