Sri Lanka Wants Peace But Not at Any Price: Prime Minister

Sri Lanka wants peace but not in a manner that will affect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake was quoted Monday by state-run Daily News as saying.

Speaking on Sunday at the inauguration of the Army Information Technology Training Institute, the prime minister said the present peace process reminded him of the traditional marriage broker who tries to deal between two parties at any cost. He wants to please both parties and sometimes does not match the specifications of one side to the needs of the other side.

The government wants peace but was firm in its decision to continue with the military operation against separatist Tamil Tiger rebels who want an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east of the country, he stressed.
