China's Olympic Champions Take Gymnastics Gold in EAG

China's gymnastic Olympic champions proved a class of their own when they cruised to China's first gold in the East Asian Games by winning the men's team event Sunday.

The Chinese team, boasting Sydney Olympic gold winners Zheng Lihui, Li Xiaopeng, Yang Wei, Xing Aowei and Huang Xu, scored 188. 100 points in the team final, 4.350 points ahead of second-placed Japan.

South Korea finished third with 179.450 while the Chinese Taipei at fourth, 171.625, while Kazakhstan's and Australia's results failed to count onto the final standings.

"I'm happy to win the first gold for the Chinese delegation," China's coach Huang Yubin said.

Gymnasts and coaches agreed the new rules, adopted into the EAG for the first time, have given great changes to the competitions.

"We've been practising under new rules for just two months, we need time to be acquainted with the changes," Huang Xu said.

Starting the rotation with the pommel horse, China were trailing South Korea, who started on rings, by 0.250 points after the first round when two gymnasts made mistakes.

"The competitions become more demanding on the gymnasts after those changes. I have no reason to be unsatisfied with the results as long as we won the golds," coach Huang said.
