ASC Consortium Conference Closes in TianjinThe APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Study Center (ASC) Consortium Conference concluded in Tianjin late Saturday afternoon in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA).It is learned that the next ASC consortium conference is to be held in Mexico next year. Gong Zhankui, director of the APEC Study Center at the Tianjin- based Nankai University, said that the two-day event was a success, with some 100 experts and scholars from the study centers of 20 APEC members presenting over 30 theses. He noted that the participants, focusing on the theme "APEC: Heading towards the New Century and a Bright Future", held active, wide-ranging and in-depth discussions on topics including relations between human capacity building and the development of economic and technological cooperation, how APEC can meet the challenges of globalization and the new economy, sub-regional trade agreements and the APEC, multilateral trade system, participation in APEC activities by small- and medium-sized enterprises, and supervision of financial institutions. APEC Secretariat representative Mario Artaza said the conference boasted the largest number of participants from APEC member economies, and Chinese governments at various levels have rendered support, indicating that China attaches importance to APEC studies. A summary report of the conference will be submitted to the APEC Secretariat and the Chinese government as a supporting document, noted Artaza. ASC, an academic organization specializing in the study of APEC issues by APEC members, concentrates on policy consultancy for APEC member governments, the latest economic developments of APEC members, follow-up analysis and studies of the reform of trade and investment policies. An ASC consortium conference of APEC members is held annually in the first half of each year in different host countries to enhance exchanges among the members and discuss the latest progress in all important APEC activities. This year's meeting was jointly held by the APEC Study Center at Nankai University and the TEDA. Founded in March, 1995, the APEC Study Center at Nankai University organizes and coordinates national APEC studies by China, provides consultancy for the Chinese government and holds academic exchanges with its counterparts in the other APEC countries.
