HK Chief Executive Visits Immigration Headquarters

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa Saturday praised the efforts by the Immigration Department in maintaining effective immigration control in Hong Kong and providing quality service to the public.

Accompanied by Director of Immigration, Ambrose S K Lee, Tung visited the Immigration Department Headquarters where he toured the Extension Section, the Registration of Persons Office and the Operational Research Section.

Tung expressed pleasure that the department had sought to deploy advanced technology to enhance efficiency and improve its services.

He noted that more than 140 million people went through Hong Kong's immigration control points every year, and the workload of staff had become heavier as the number of travelers was constantly rising.

"Immigration colleagues have dealt with their challenges efficiently, professionally and enthusiastically. Their outstanding performance is exemplary to the civil service,"he said.

At the Extension Section, Tung noted that an average of 400,000 applications for extension of stay was procured every year from foreign nationals residing in Hong Kong.

Tung commended the department for the important role it played in combating illegal immigration and deterring attempts to make Hong Kong a springboard for human trafficking.
