China Unicom Opens Branch in Tibet
China United Telecommunications Corp. (China Unicom), China Telecom's chief rival, opened a business branch Friday in this capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The establishment of the company's branch in Tibet signifies that the company now has complete coverage of China's 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. So far, the company has set up more than 300 branches across the country, and was listed on the New York and Hong Kong last June.

The Tibet branch of China Unicom will operate a variety of telecommunications services, including domestic and international long-distance calls as well as mobile phone calls.

The opening of the branch will amplify competition in the telecommunications business in Tibet.
