Macao Marks World Museum Day

Anybody in Macao can take shuttle bus to visit the nine leading museums free of charge from Friday to Sunday.

The Special Administrative Region (SAR) government made the effort to mark this year's World Museum Day, which falls on Friday.

Macao reports the highest density of museums in the world -- with a dozen museums in an area of only 23 square kilometers. The exhibits include art works, racing vehicles, wine, maritime products and house models of different styles.

Visitors felt to be guests at a Portuguese friend's when they stepped into the Macao House Museum, where the room structure, the furniture and the decorations kept the Portuguese origin.

If it were not for the persuasion of the museum staff, a local primary school student would jump on an old racing motorcycle at the Grand Prix Museum, as he could not resist the temptation of " becoming a hero."

Macao itself is a large museum with so many Western-style churches, temples and buildings, Chang Lee Ah, a bus driver, told Xinhua.

Students from the Macao Tourism Institute acted as tour guides for those visiting the museums.

The museums in Macao have become both study centers and tourist attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, sources said.

The International Museum Association declared May 18 as the World Museum Day in 1977.
