HK Hosts Over 300 Conventions, Exhibitions in 2000

Over 300 conventions and exhibitions were held in Hong Kong last year, bringing in over 300, 000 visitors from around the world, Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Antony Leung said Friday.

Addressing the annual dinner of the HK Exhibition & Convention Organizers' & Suppliers' Association, Leung stressed that the convention and exhibition industry has "long been regarded as a high-yield business."

He said that the addition of the magnificent building of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in 1997 has much enhanced the Hong Kong convention and exhibition landscape.

Hong Kong is now the trade fair capital of Asia, and based on forward bookings, has been ranked as the number one convention and exhibition destination in the region by the International Congress and Convention Association, according to Leung.

The per capita spending of convention and exhibition delegates is two and a half times that of the average visitors, Leung said, citing that last year alone, these delegates spent over HK$3 billion (US$384 million) in Hong Kong.

Philately Exhibition Features Water Conservancy

A major philately exhibition with water conservancy as the theme was held Friday in the International Exhibition Center in Tianjin, north China.

The exhibition, the second of its kind, includes a total of 300 frames of stamps featuring 73 topics. The stamps are from collectors working in water conservancy departments in 22 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country.

Some 26 sets of stamps highlighting Chinese leaders, workers' lives and projects -- all relating to water-conservancy -- won prizes at the exhibition.
