China Celebrates World Museum Day

A series of activities were held Friday at the Beijing Working People's Cultural Palace to mark the annual World Museum Day.

Nearly 100 museums from Beijing and neighboring Tianjin staged exhibitions, relics lectures and contests at the palace.

The exhibitions featured ancient pagodas, traditional culture, ancient furniture and weapons, among others.

Zhang Wenbin, director of the State Administration Cultural Heritage, said that to attract more visitors, the museums in Beijing were open to the public free of charge Friday.

Of China's 1,800 museums, 112 are in the nation's capital, with a total collection of two million relics and art works.

The International Museum Association declared May 18 World Museum Day in 1977.
